Coles County Treasurer
Coles County real estate taxes are now past due. Our second installment due date was Sept. 1, 2020. All payments must be paid in person at the courthouse or the mail. Penalty will increase on 10-01-2020.
The last day to pay prior to the delinquent list going to the newspaper is 9-30-2010. The list goes to the newspaper 10-1-2020.
Penalty will increase on both installments 10-2-2020
Last day to pay with personal checks is 10-6-2020 after this date you must pay with cash or certified check. Certified letters will also be mailed by this date. A $10.00 publication fee will be added to you bill.
Last day to register as a Tax Buyer is 10-8-2020 at 4:30 p.m. To purchase taxes at the sale on October 22, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. you must register with a letter of intent to purchase taxes. There is a registration fee of $250.00 which will be applied to purchase or returned if you attempt to purchase. The registration fee will be forfeited due to no show or not attempting to purchase. First time tax buyers must provide a letter of credit from a bank showing the amount of funds you are approved to purchase. The tax sale will be held at Unique Suites Hotel, 920 W. Lincoln Ave. Charleston, IL 61920 at 1:00 p.m.
The delinquent list will be published on October 9, 2020 in the Mattoon Journal Gazette and Times Courier.
The last day to pay with credit card is October 14, 2020

The County Treasurer serves as both Treasurer and Collector for the County. The Treasurer is responsible for depositing, investing, and disbursing funds for Coles County. The Collector is responsible for billing, investing, and distributing property taxes.
In Coles County, approximately 25,000 real estate tax bills are mailed each year, and collections are over 44 million in tax dollars. These funds are distributed to over 60 taxing districts.
