HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Coles County Regional Planning and Development Commission
The Commission's Historic Preservation Advisory Council annually honors Coles County individuals, organizations or businesses which have made outstanding contributions in the area of historic preservation. The awards are presented at the annual Historic Preservation Award Program in May.

Two types of awards are presented by the HPAC. The first is the "Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation." This award is given to individuals, organizations, or businesses for on-going activity in promotion of the preservation of the Coles County cultural environment. No more than two recipients are named each year in this category. The "Certificate of Merit" is the second type of award. This award honors a specific, well-defined project such as a house restoration or neighborhood restoration. An unlimited number of these certificates can be presented each year.

The HPAC also makes recommendations for sites to be listed on the Coles County Register of Significant Places and reviews all nominations for listing on this local register. The Council performs this review process in March and April, prior to the May Awards Program.
