Food Safety Education Month
Sack Lunch Safety
Prevent foodborne illness from becoming part of your sack lunch by
incorporating food safety practices into your kitchen. In celebration of
Food Safety Month, the Coles County Health Department would like to
remind you to follow a few simple rules to keep your food safe. Pack
safe lunches for school or work with these food safety tips:
- If you make school lunches the night before, keep them cold in
the refrigerator or the freezer. Always wash your hands before
handling food and keep pets away from kitchen counters when
preparing food.
- Use insulated lunch boxes to maintain safe temperatures of food.
Use insulated bottles to keep hot foods such as soup or chili hot.
Add hot water in the bottle, let it stand for a few minutes then
empty the bottle and fill with the hot food.
- Do not keep leftovers from the lunchbox. Uneaten food should be
discarded.
- Wash insulated lunch totes or boxes with hot soapy water after
each use.
- Rinse fruits and vegetables under running tap water, including
those with skins and rinds that are not eaten. Dry them with a paper
towel.
