Food Safety Education Month
Food Safety at Home
Prevent foodborne illness from affecting your family by
incorporating food safety into your kitchen. In celebration of Food
Safety Month, the Coles County Health Department would like to remind
you to follow a few simple rules to keep your food safe. Make these food
safety tips part of your routine at home to provide safer food for you
and your family:
-
When shopping, purchase cold and frozen food last
and place it in an insulated bag or cooler to transport home. Do not
purchase frozen food if you see ice crystals, fluids, or water
stains in the packaging.
-
When shopping, inspect the packaging of the food
products. Packaging should be clean and in good condition. If boxes
are cut or broken they should not be purchased. Cans of food should
not be swollen or dented.
-
Inspect the use-by dates on food products. Do not
purchase if the use-by date has passed, or if the packaging is damp,
water-stained, or leaking.
-
When washing dishes, change the water when the suds
are gone or the water is dirty. Rinse water needs to be changed when
it becomes dirty or full of suds. Do not towel dry dishes. Place
them upside down so they can air dry.
-
Wrap or cover leftovers before storing them, and
store food only in containers intended for food. When taking
leftovers from a restaurant, put them in the refrigerator
immediately upon your return home and reheat leftovers to 165F
before eating.
