The Coles County Clerk & Recorder's
Office contains a wealth of vital records, including Birth Records,
Marriage Records, and Death Records. Applications for Marriage
Licenses and Civil Unions may be made at the Clerk's Office, too. Birth Records: From 1878 to the present. Access to indexes prior to 1916. Birth Records are not public records, and only the following are entitled to receive certified copies:

copies available for $14 for the first copy and $4 for each
additional copy at each time of request. To request a Birth Record,

Marriage Records: From 1830 to the present. Access to indexes. Certified copies available for $14 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy at each time of request. To request a Marriage Record, please print out and complete the proper form here. Death Records: From 1878 to the present. Access to indexes prior to 1916. Death Records are not public records and are only available to those who have a personal or property right interest with the decedent. Certified copies available for $16 for the first copy and $6 for each additional copy at each time of request. To request a Death Record, please print out and complete the proper form here. Marriage Licenses and Civil Unions: To obtain a marriage or civil union license, both parties must be present and the marriage/union must take place in Coles County. There is a one-day waiting period; the license will be good for 60 days. The fee is $35, payable by cash or check. Proof of age must be demonstrated. You may request a Search of Records by printing out the form, completing it, and bringing it to the Clerk's office with your payment. Genealogy: A certified copy of Birth Records will be issued for Genealogical interests if the birth has been on file for at least 75 years. The fee for the copy is $14. A certified copy of a Marriage License will be issued for Genealogical interests for marriages prior to 1900; the fee for these copies is $14. A certified copy of a death certificate will be issued for Genealogical interests if the death has been on file at least 20 years; the fee for such a copy is $16. Genealogical copies will be stamped "for genealogical purpose only." When requesting a certificate by mail, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
